Research Focus:
Functional Micro-Origami for Manipulation, Sensing, and Robotics
We are using photolithography-based micro-fabrication techniques to create and explore miniature origami-inspired systems for applications in micro-manipulation, sensing, and robotics. For example, we have created electro-thermal micro-origami that can self-assemble into 3D structures, reversibly actuate, shape morph, and function in different environments. We have also used piezoelectric PZT films to achieve rapid efficient actuation and sensing. By insulating the electrical components we have made these micro-origami functional in aqueous environments and are using them to test the properties of spheroids and muscle tissue.
